Usa Jingu (宇佐神宮) is considered the head shrine of Japan's roughly 40,000 Hachiman shrines. Its Main Hall, three connected halls from Daiichiden to Daisanden, was rebuilt between 1855 and 1861 and named a National Treasure in 1952. It is a prime example of the hachiman-zukuri style, with two gabled roofs joined front and back.

A yokozuna with 69 straight winshailed from Shimosho, Usa.

The 35th yokozuna, Futabayama Sadaji (双葉山定次), was born on February 9, 1912 in what is now Shimosho, Usa. He became yokozuna in May 1937, and before losing to Akinoumi in January 1939, he had set sumo's all-time record of 69 consecutive wins.

03 / Kawabe-Takamori Kofun Cluster

A 57.5m keyhole-shaped mound --Akatsuka Kofun, built in the late 3rd century.

The Kawabe-Takamori Kofun Cluster (川部・高森古墳群) became a National Historic Site in 1980. Its best-known mound, Akatsuka Kofun (赤塚古墳), is 57.5m long and thought to date to the late 3rd century, making it said to be one of Kyushu's oldest keyhole-shaped tombs. The area is preserved as Usa Fudoki-no-Oka park.
