Yunohira Onsen's origins are said to date to the Kamakura period, some 800 years ago. The hot-spring town took its present shape in the late Edo period. Along the Kagano River that runs through its center, villagers led by a man named Kudo Sansuke are said to have paved the stone-lane slope about 300 years ago. It is also recorded in the Edo-era gazetteer "Bungo Kokushi."

At the foot of Mt. Kurodake in Asono,Otoike wells up about 20,000 tons a day.

Otoike, welling up at the foot of Mt. Kurodake in Asono, Shonai, was named one of the Ministry of the Environment's "100 Best Waters of Japan" in 1985. Having taken more than a year to filter through the ground, it wells up at a constant 12.6°C year-round, at a rate of about 20,000 tons a day.

03 / Shonai Kagura

Recorded as early as 1778,the kagura is still danced by 12 troupes.

Shonai Kagura, a folk kagura passed down in Shonai, Yufu, is recorded as having been offered by families of Shinto priests as early as 1778. Today two schools, Inuyama-ryu and Miyama-ryu, and 12 troupes keep it alive, taking turns performing on the third Saturday from May to October at Shonai Sports Park. It was designated a Yufu City Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2007.

On October 1, 2005, the towns of Hasama, Shonai, and Yufuin merged to form Yufu City. The city spans a basin below Mt. Yufu and the hills around Mt. Kurodake. The JR Kyūdai Main Line runs through it, but no shinkansen or train reaches a major city center without a transfer. City hall stands in Kakihara, Shonai (柿原); the nearest station is Tenjinyama.
