A gable-entrance house facing the Nagasaki Kaidō. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a hybrid building: a townhouse in exterior and layout, with a farmhouse-style earthen-floored section. Built in the late Edo period (1830–1867), it was originally a sake brewery. It was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1974.

02 / Souke Market (ソウケ市)

A market for woven-bamboo sieves boastsover 300 years of tradition on the old Nagasaki Kaidō.

"Souke" are sieves woven from bamboo. The town announces its Souke Market, which "boasts a tradition of over 300 years," along the old Nagasaki Kaidō in the Honmachi district (around Omachi Higashi Post Office). In 2024, 2025 and 2026 the dates were September 27 to 29.

03 / Mount Hijiri (聖岳)

Up 792 steps, there is a lookoutwith a view of the whole town.

At 416 m, Mount Hijiri (聖岳) is what the town website calls "the symbol of the town." The prefecture's tourism site says that the observation deck at the summit, reached by 792 steps, overlooks the whole town, and that the shrine above it holds a heart-shaped stone basin.

The total area is 11.50 km², 4.46 km east to west and 4.25 km north to south. National Route 34 and the JR Sasebo Line run east-west through the middle of the town, and on the north side an urban area spreads over the foothills leading up to Mount Hijiri. The south is paddy fields, part of the Shiroishi Plain, and the Rokkaku River forms the border with the neighboring municipalities.

  1. 01The Kishima Coal Mine Substation Ruins (杵島炭鉱変電所跡), or Omachi Rengakan (大町煉瓦館), is a red-brick building said to have supplied power to the mine facilities and miners' housing from 1927. After the mine closed it passed into private hands, and a volunteer group was formed in 2005. Certified a Saga Prefecture Heritage site in 2020, it now serves as a community space.
  2. 02Omachi thrived as a coal-mining town until the Kishima mine closed in 1969, and in 1941 its population passed 24,000. The town's commemorative booklet calls Omachi Elementary School in fiscal 1958 (86 classes, 4,069 pupils) the "era of the nation's largest mammoth school."
  3. 03A small town of 11.50 km² near the center of Saga Prefecture. A coal-waste hill (ボタ山) opened as Botayama Wanpaku Park in 2013.
