Takamiya Haiji is an ancient temple site on a level terrace on the middle slope of Mt. Kongo, at about 550 m above sea level. The city notes that no excavation has ever been carried out there. The foundation stones suggest a main hall facing east, and the tiles collected closely resemble those of Fujiwara Palace and are thought to date from the early 8th century.

  • National historic site, 1927
  • About 550 m above sea level
  • No past excavation (city)

Midoro Kofun is a national historic site covering two tombs, north and south. In the south tomb's passage, a rope-hanging projection on the end of a house-shaped coffin's lid bears a lotus design. The city calls it a well-known example of the union of tomb culture and Buddhist culture, and says the side projections were probably cut down during a later burial.

  • National historic site, 1961 (both tombs)
  • Six-petal lotus design (Agency for Cultural Affairs)
  • One house-shaped coffin each in chamber and passage

Gosemachi's seware-gesui, or lot-dividing drain, runs down the middle of each block, carrying off water and also marking the lot boundaries. Stone-lined moats also remain at places such as the western edge of Higashi-Gose. The Kenchi Yoshu, a record of the 1742 land survey, and its maps were designated a city cultural property in 2024.

  • Moat 5 shaku (about 1.5 m) wide
  • City cultural property, 2024
  • Four survey maps survive

Gose City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Kosedera Pagoda Site is a national historic site, said to be the remains of the Kosedera recorded in the first year of the Shucho era under Emperor Tenmu. The pagoda site keeps its earthen platform, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs records that the foundation stone for the central pillar (shinso) has a socket for the pillar and a hole presumed to have drained that socket outward
  2. 02The nogami (field-god) ritual at Noguchi Shrine in Saragi, a city-designated festival, builds a straw serpent over 10 m long, and spectators were once splashed with miso soup. Chihara no Tondo burns a pair of morning-glory-shaped bonfire towers, and the susuki lanterns of the Gose lantern ritual join ten tall lanterns in three tiers; both are prefecturally designated
  3. 03The city's tourism page says the foothill terraces of Mt. Kongo and Mt. Katsuragi were the home base of the ancient Katsuragi clan and are thought to have been sacred places for the gods since then. Jo Urugami Kofun, reported in 1916 with a huge stone chamber and coffin, was confirmed by a later survey and designated a national historic site in 2021
