01 / Lacquer-tapping tools

Lacquer-tapping tools used mainly in Ano,109 pieces in one set, survive.

The centre of Yoshino lacquer production was the Ano district of the former Yoshino-gun. The prefecture's document records that in 1877 (Meiji 10) Nara Prefecture produced over 40 percent of Japan's lacquer sap, most of it from Yoshino-gun. A set of 109 pieces, including a nata hatchet, sickles and 60 urushi-ganna scrapers, is a prefectural tangible folk cultural property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs database describes Horike House as a late-Muromachi hip-and-gable, thatched house, an Important Cultural Property since 1979. The city records an origin tale for the name Ano: Emperor Go-Murakami named the place Kanafu, and an edict of 1351 (Shohei 6) changed it to Ano.

The city records that Matsukura Shigemasa is said to have entered Futami Castle in 1608 (Keicho 13) and set up the new village to promote the castle town and gather merchants. It was selected an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2010. The prefecture says iron-lattice and mushiko windows were the main type in Edo-period townhouses.

Gojo City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The former JNR Goshin Line was a railway planned to link Gojo Station and Shingu Station. The city records that roadbed work between Gojo and Jodo was completed in 1959 (Showa 34), leaving only track laying and similar work, before the project was halted. The Japan Society of Civil Engineers chose the structures as a 2016 Selected Civil Engineering Heritage; the prefecture's tourism guide says bamboo came out of a pier that was blown up, and that iron is thought to have been saved
  2. 02Dadado no Onihashiri is held at Nenbutsu-ji Temple on 14 January in most years. A father demon in a red mask with an axe, a mother demon in a blue mask and a child demon in a red mask with a mallet go round the hall with torches in the night rite, designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1995
  3. 03The city records that Kagiya Yahei, who opened the fireworks maker Kagiya in Edo, is said to have come from Shinohara in Oto-cho. Arasaka Kiln Site is a prefectural historic site, and the city writes that tiles from its 7th-century kilns roofed Kawaradera Temple in Asuka
