Imai-cho developed as a fortified temple town and was later granted self-governing privileges by the shogunate in the Edo period. The city's chronology records that in 1634 it was permitted to issue silver notes called Imai-satsu, and the city describes them as a currency of its own, equal in value to domain notes. The district was selected as a nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1993.
