Tsujibansho, ashigaru quarter01 ／ Torii
The first torii of Taga Taisha stands on the old Nakasendo road in Takamiya. This stone torii of the Myojin type was built in 1635, when the shrine buildings were erected, and is about 11 meters high. The shrine is about 3 kilometers from here, and stone lanterns once lined the approach every 20 meters.
02 ／ Tomb
A keyhole-shaped tomb near the summit of Mount Kojin, built about 1,600 years ago, at the end of the 4th century. It is 124 meters long, which the city describes as the second largest in the prefecture. It became a National Historic Site in 2011, the third in the city after the Hikone Castle site and the Ii family graves.
03 ／ Plant
The city’s information sheet says Otokkuri-ichigo, a bramble, is known only from Hikone Castle. Makino Tomitaro found it at the site of the Omote Goten in 1894, and described it as a new species in 1902, using specimens that included those sent by Hirase Sakugoro.
Living here
Trains run from Hikone Station on the JR Biwako Line to Kyoto and Osaka without a change. For Nagoya and Tokyo, change to the Shinkansen at the next station, Maibara.
