01 ／ Cape
Cape Irozaki (石廊崎), the southernmost point of the Izu Peninsula, was laid out as Irozaki Ocean Park (石廊崎オーシャンパーク) in 2019. On the cliff stands Iro Shrine (石室神社), said to rest on a ship's mast, and the Irozaki Lighthouse dates from 1871. The Pacific opens straight ahead.
02 ／ Hot springs
Shimogamo Onsen (下賀茂温泉), at the centre of town, has more than 110 sources, and more than ten of them gush naturally at over 100°C. It is said to have been found in 1560, and the town is known as the first place in Japan to grow melons in greenhouses heated by the springs.
03 ／ Flowers
Along the banks of the Aono River (青野川), which runs through Shimogamo Onsen, Kawazu cherries and rapeseed flowers bloom side by side. They peak in mid-February, when the Minami no Sakura and Nanohana Festival (みなみの桜と菜の花まつり) brings stalls to the riverside.
Living here
There is no railway in town. From Izukyu-Shimoda Station a Tokai Bus takes about 27 minutes to the stop in front of the town hall. Shimogamo, where the town hall stands, is the centre of town, and at the mouth of the Aono River the bow-shaped Yumigahama (弓ヶ浜) beach, one of Japan's 100 selected beaches, curves along the shore.
