In the early Meiji era, people grown rich on silkworms tiled their walls and sealed the joints with plaster, against fire and a winter west wind that blows for three days once it starts. These are namako walls. A 2002 survey counted 189 buildings. Iwashina School (岩科学校), built in 1880, is a namako-walled school and an Important Cultural Property.

02 / Cherry leaves

From May to August, the leaves of field-grown Oshima cherries are picked one by one by hand, tied in bundles of 50 and packed in salt. After about half a year they turn the colour of tortoiseshell. The town makes about 70% of the national output, and calls the sweet sakuraba-mochi (桜葉餅).

The Ishibu rice terraces (石部の棚田) were built by stacking stones. At one point more than 90% had been abandoned, but the district began restoring them in 2000, and since 2002 an owner scheme has brought city people to plant and harvest. Below lies Suruga Bay, and beyond it Mount Fuji.
