01 / Storage Mikan Warehouses (貯蔵みかんの蔵)

Beneath the warehouses where mikan rest, long ventilation shafts are dug.

Most of the village's mikan are storage mikan: not shipped right after harvest, they rest for some months in each farm's warehouse to build sweetness. The warehouses have long ventilation shafts dug underground so fresh air keeps moving. Shipping runs from February to late March. According to the village history, by about 1904 the whole village was growing them.

Nearby, Negozuka Tumulus (also called Anki Tumulus) is the village's only tumulus, a horizontal-entrance tomb of stacked stone about 2 m high. Sanagochi belongs to Myodo District and is the only village in Tokushima Prefecture. The jokai (常会) is a neighborhood association said to descend from the five-household groups of the domain era; a monthly meeting shares news from the administration, the farm cooperative and local events. Route 438's improvement made commuting to Tokushima City easier, and part-time farming households grew.
