01 / Sudachi of Orono

"Shall we grow sudachi?" — so said six farmersof Orono in 1955, at the start of it all.

Orono (鬼籠野) has low hills and little timber, and beyond log-grown shiitake the farmers wanted one more mainstay. The six formed a society, had scions of four strains, Kamiyama 1 to 4, prepared, and from 1957 and 1958 increased the trees. A monument to 50 years of sudachi growing stands before the JA Tokushima Kamiyama Orono sorting plant.

At Kamiichinomiya Oawa Shrine (上一宮大粟神社) the enshrined deity, Ōgetsuhime-no-mikoto, governs the five grains and is said to have come to Awa Province long ago from Nyū village in Ise, and to have sown and spread millet across this land. The founding date is unknown, and 14 munafuda ridge tablets survive. Jinryō has long been called "Awafu no Sato," said to be the source of the name Awa.
