It stands on a huge bluestone crag at the west end of Kojoyama, where Kawashima Castle stood. It looks over the Yoshino River and Zennyujijima (善入寺島), an island that flourished as a major indigo-growing area. A poem by Ito Chinzan on a monument here describes a thousand sailboats passing (modern translation).

Yoshinogawa City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Egawa water temperature anomaly is a phenomenon at the Egawa spring source in Chiejima, Kamojima, where the water is about 10°C in summer and over 20°C in winter. It was designated a Tokushima Prefecture Natural Monument in 1954. The Environment Agency also chose "Egawa Spring" as one of Japan's 100 famous waters in 1985.
  2. 02Nishi-Oe Station and Egawa Amusement Park tell of a station and a park opened with funds from the indigo merchant Kudo family. Takagai Stone Walls are the stone walls of a mountain village in Misato, and Iwanohana Lookout looks over the Yoshino River from Kojoyama in Kawashima.
  3. 03The city also has Inbe Shrine in Yamakawa, which performs the rites for the aratae cloth offered at the Daijosai (such as the start of weaving); the Misato fireflies and the Funakubo Ontsutsuji azalea grove, both national natural monuments; Nishi-Oe Hachiman Shrine with its Bizen-ware guardian dogs; Sogaya Gokuro, a comic actor from Kamojima; and Fujii-dera, Temple No. 11 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
