This stone-faced embankment on the Matsukawa River was built to the plan of Naoe Kanetsugu. Its cross-section is a trapezoid about 5 m wide at the top, 9 m at the base and 2 m high. When part of it was cut away for a bridge replacement, boulders kept emerging from its core.

Crews dug from both sides of the mountain, and the two headings met with no discernible offset about 470 m from the Yamagata side and about 400 m from the Fukushima side. The work used American-made drilling machines, and the tunnel was completed the next year.
