01 / Sedge hats

Nakatsugawa, which made sedge hats in the off-season,makes most flower hats for the Hanagasa Festival.

Nakatsugawa is one of the prefecture's heaviest-snow districts. It long made farm sedge hats in the winter off-season and has made flower hats since 1963. A prefectural PR document says about 80% of the flower hats used at the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival (around 2017) are made here, each household doing everything by hand, from growing the sedge to sewing.

02 / Tunnel channel

A 154 m tunnel through the ridgejoins the western valley and the Shirakawa gorge.

The prefecture's listing describes a tunnel channel cutting through a side ridge at the seventh station (1,500 m) of the Nakatsugawa trailhead on Mt. Iide. Inside it is 1.3 to 1.5 m high and 70 to 82 cm wide. Work to secure irrigation water for the domain began in 1799 and finished after 15 working years, dug from both ends.
