01 / Burial mound

In a temple's grounds,a round mound 10 m high.

A round burial mound in the grounds of Nanshoin Temple, with a mound height of 10 m. The prefecture considers it to have been built around the second half of the 6th century, in the late Kofun period, and gives the length of its horizontal stone chamber as 17.54 m. It was designated a Prefectural Historic Site in 1965.

02 / Waterway

To a village about 30 m above the river,water drawn from about 2 km upstream.

The Kamiashigawa settlement stands about 30 m above the Ashigawa river, a place where river water is hard to use. According to a booklet by the city board of education, a channel about 2 km long was laid from the Ashigawa upstream, with water-drawing places called tameoke built for daily use.

03 / Provincial temple ruins

One of the provincial temples built across the country by the edict of Emperor Shomu in 741 (Tenpyo 13), designated a National Historic Site in 1922. The prefecture describes a Daikandaiji-style layout, with the south gate through to the lecture hall in a straight line. The city's plan cites the stone decoration, such as the platform and stone paving of the main hall site, as the feature of a "stone provincial temple."
