01 / Tunnel

A road tunnel under the passwas the main route until 1958.

A road tunnel cut to carry the old Koshu Kaido over Sasago Pass. The prefecture notes twin pilaster ornaments on each side of the portal and bracket-like decoration above. It served as the main route until the new tunnel opened in 1958 (Showa 33). The city says it was completed in 1938 (Showa 13) and is 240 m long.

02 / Puppet theatre

Puppets worked by three people,carried on by the village youth.

The Oiwake puppet theatre is a prefecturally designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Worked by three people, it was kept up in the Edo period by the village's young men, in management, upkeep and performance alike. The prefecture records that it nearly died out after the Meiji Restoration, and that Mr. Amano of Oiwake, regretting this, kept the tradition alive. Some puppet heads are the work of master makers of Awaji and Awa.

Iwadono Castle Ruins is a prefecturally designated Historic Site, and the prefecture says its lord and date of construction are unknown. A cultural properties officer at the prefectural archaeological centre writes that the rock is conglomerate, that many enclosures follow one another southwest of the main enclosure at the summit, and that the Agekido gate site lies between huge boulders.
