Of the village's eight settlements, the seven from Hashitate to Konagata lie along the Kosuge River in the Tama River system, while Nagasaku lies along the Tsuru River in the Sagami River system. Tsuru Pass, between Nagasaku and Konagata and Shirasawa, is a watershed, about 850 m above sea level, says the village pamphlet. Nagasaku also has its Seven Wonders, among them a tale that the Kannon disliked pheasants.

The village calls the steep fields of Hashitateits "symbol of the headwaters landscape."

Behind the settlement of Hashitate, steeply sloped fields rise toward the sky. The village's Headwaters Landscape Plan (March 2012) calls these kakejiku-batake, or hanging-scroll fields, a landscape "seen only at the headwaters" and records that konjac, buckwheat and open-field vegetables are grown there.
