01 ／ Charter

A charter of 1622 says half the watermay be used by Tategoshi.

A document dated 8 April of the 8th year of Genna (1622), designated by the town, is an agreement on running an irrigation channel from a temple to Higuchi through the land of Tategoshi village. It says that half the water may be used in Tategoshi. It is regarded as a valid agreement (a water custom), and the community has kept it. This channel is the canal whose intake weir is now the main facility of the land improvement district.

02 ／ Marker post

The old market on the upper streethad a route of set length.

The Gojōme market began in the Middle Ages and has a history of nearly 500 years. It was once held alternately on the upper and lower streets, with marker posts at four points on the north and south ends of the route. A post that stood at the river end, the only one saved when discarded during road paving, is a square chestnut pillar carved with characters that read "from here northeast, one hundred ken...".

03 ／ Ancient well

Found in a rice field:a well of thick cedar planks.

Found during land consolidation, the well is a square frame of four thick cedar planks laid crosswise. The planks are 4 to 5 cm thick, 15 to 30 cm wide and 1.2 to 1.3 m long, and the inside measures 88 by 84 cm. The bottom was packed with round stones. From the pottery found in it, its use is estimated to be no later than the early Heian period. It was designated a prefectural historic site in 1963.

The town's guide gives 30 minutes by rail from Akita Station to Hachirōgata Station, then 10 minutes by bus. The Akita Chuo Kotsu route bus takes 71 minutes from the west exit of Akita Station to Gojōme Bus Terminal. A farming and mountain community ranging from steep highlands to paddy fields, it took its present form in 1955, when five towns and villages merged.
