01 / Former Chiba Residence

Kaita was a post town on the Saigoku Kaidō. The Chiba family (house name Jinboya), sake brewers, held key posts at the post station, including the Tenka-okuri and Yado-okuri duties for the Hiroshima domain. The guest hall of 1774 is in sukiya style, with carved transoms of reed geese, wave rabbits and dragons. The study is a prefectural Important Cultural Property; the garden, a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty.

02 / Une Kannonmen Tumuli

A round tumulus of the early 7th century:Tumulus No. 1 has a stone chamber 8.1 m long.

The Une Kannonmen tumuli lie on the south side of Mt. Hiura in Une 2-chome. The horizontal-entrance stone chamber (横穴式石室) of Tumulus No. 1 is 2.1 m high, 1.9 m wide and 8.1 m long; Sue ware, Haji ware and ironwork were excavated. The town's history says the size of the chamber shows that powerful local clans lived here.

03 / Oda Mikio

Of the triple jump's three leaps,a ratio of 6:4:5 carried him farthest.

Oda Mikio, a native of Kaitaichi Town (now Kaita), jumped 15 m 21 cm in the triple jump at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and became the first Japanese Olympic gold medalist. From records he wrote in his notebook every day, he found that the distance grew most when his three leaps were in a ratio of 6:4:5.

The town covers 13.79 km². Mt. Hiura (345.9 m) stands to the north, ranges of Dōsho and Kanagatōro form the east and west borders, and the Seno River flows through the middle into Kaita Bay. The old town center was Futsukaichi, near Kusakabashi Bridge; as river silt built up land, the center moved toward the river mouth, to Kaitaichi.
