Cape Erimo had lost its primeval forest to logging and grazing and turned to desert. Greening began in 1953 (Showa 28). The Forestry Agency says that in 1957 the Erimo-style method was developed, laying gota, miscellaneous seaweed washed up on the shore, to hold the soil in place.
