Temiya Cave was found in 1866 (Keio 2) by a stonemason from Odawara who had come to build a herring lodge and noticed patterns on the rock wall while looking for stone. The carvings date from roughly 1,600 years ago, in the Epi-Jomon period, and the cave is a national historic site. The preservation center keeps the intaglio carvings in a capsule.
