A Yayoi village:73 houses in a fifth of it.

In June 1962 three junior high school students living in the town came upon the Onaka site. It is a late Yayoi settlement, 500 metres long and 180 wide, about 70,000 square metres in all. A fifth of that area has been dug so far, turning up the floors of 73 pit dwellings. It became a national historic site in 1967.
