The Inamino plateau has no large river, and stayed open field until modern times. From the Edo period people broke the land in, then drew water through the Ogo and Yamadagawa canals in the Meiji and Taisho eras and later the Tobanyo system. Today 89 reservoirs, about 400 hectares of them, do the irrigating: a quarter of the farmland area.

02 / Vines

Meiji Japan tried makingits own wine here.

In March 1880 the state opened the Banshu Vineyard (播州葡萄園) here, part of the drive to build up industry: grow European vines, test the processing, and pass what was learned to the rest of the country. It was sold into private hands in 1888, and the site became a national historic site on 26 January 2006.

Inamino melons are grown one fruit to a vine and pollinated by bees. Before shipping, random samples go through a non-destructive meter and must read 13 or above for sugar content. The melons carry the Hyogo recommended brand certification, and growers keep testing on their own, aiming at zero pesticide residue.
