In 1886 the meridian of 135 degrees east was fixed as Japan Standard Time, in force from 1 January 1888. The line runs through Akashi, and in 1910 a marker for the crossing of the standard meridian was built here. The city's planetarium followed in 1960, standing on the line itself.
