In 1925, on Uchinada's dunes,an amusement park called "Hokuriku's Takarazuka" opened.

Timber merchant Kataro Hirasawa (平澤嘉太郎) opened Awagasaki Amusement Park (粟ヶ崎遊園) on Uchinada's sand dunes in July 1925. On grounds of about 200,000 square meters, an in-house girls' operetta troupe performed in a 500-seat theater, and the park became known as "Hokuriku's Takarazuka" (北陸の宝塚). A 1929 fire burned the main theater, but it reopened, and the park ran for about 20 years until it closed in 1944.

  • July 19, 1925: opened (Taisho 14)
  • Grounds: ~200,000 sqm, 500-seat theater

In 1952, the U.S. military, citing the Korean War, requested Uchinada's dunes as an artillery test range. Villagers rose in protest, and by June 1953 they had built sit-in huts at 16 spots inside the range. That September they accepted conditional, time-limited use, and by March 1957 the dunes fell quiet again.

In Uchinada's Nishiarai district (西荒屋地区), peanut mochi made with dune-grown peanuts has long been a children's snack. A local revitalization group, the Nishiarai Farming Promotion Association (西荒屋営農促進会), now sells it as "Uchinada Mochi" (内灘餅), using rice and peanuts grown entirely in Uchinada, each piece made by hand.

  • Made with town-grown rice and dune-grown peanuts
  • Made by the Nishiarai Farming Promotion Association
  • One raw piece (75g): 150 yen

Uchinada Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Uchinada is a dune town split north and south by the Kahoku-gata floodway. The Sunset Bridge Uchinada (サンセットブリッジ内灘), a cable-stayed bridge opened in 2001, now joins the divided town.
  2. 02From the Taisho into the Showa era, the dunes held Awagasaki Amusement Park (粟ヶ崎遊園), known as "Hokuriku's Takarazuka." In the 1950s, the dunes were also the stage of the Uchinada Struggle (内灘闘争), over accepting a U.S. military test range.
  3. 03Peanut mochi from Nishiarai, sold as "Uchinada Mochi" (内灘餅), and dune-grown rakkyo called "Pearl of the Dunes" (砂丘の真珠) still come from the dune fields, and every May the town fills with the World Kite Festival (世界の凧の祭典).
