On October 1, 1999, "Kazuemachi" (主計町), a name lost when postal addresses were overhauled, was restored as part of Owaricho 2-chome. The name is said to come from the residence of Kaga-domain retainer Tomita Kazue. The district was expanded in 2004, and teahouse buildings now line the Asano River.

  • 1999/10/1: Kazuemachi restored
  • 0.88ha, about 30 households (expanded 0.14ha in 2004)
  • Named, it is said, for retainer Tomita Kazue's residence

The Tatsumi Canal (辰巳用水) is said to have been built in 1632 on the order of the third domain lord, Maeda Toshitsune, by Itaya Heishiro. Running about 11km from the upper Sai River to Kanazawa Castle, it used the reverse-siphon principle called fusekoshi no ri to cross a valley; wooden pipes were buried under a bridge by Ishikawa Gate. About 8.7km of it became a National Historic Site in 2010.

Under the 5th domain lord, Maeda Tsunanori, the Kaga domain adopted Hosho-school Noh (能楽) and let townspeople, not only samurai, study it. In Kanazawa, gardeners are said to have joked that "chants come falling down from the pines," a sign of how deeply Noh wove into daily life. Kaga Hosho (加賀宝生) was designated an intangible cultural property of Kanazawa City in 1950.

Kanazawa City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Kanazawa was the castle town of the Maeda family, lords of the Kaga domain. The gate of Oyama Shrine (尾山神社), built in 1875 (Meiji 8), blends Japanese, Chinese and Western styles; its third-story colored glass is said to have served as a lighthouse for ships off Kanaiwa.
  2. 02Kazuemachi (主計町), along the Asano River, is a neighborhood whose old name -- erased when postal addresses were overhauled -- was restored in 1999. It is said to be named for the residence of Kaga retainer Tomita Kazue, and its row of teahouse buildings is a National Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.
  3. 03The Tatsumi Canal (辰巳用水), said to have been built by Itaya Heishiro in 1632, carried water across a valley to Kanazawa Castle using the reverse-siphon principle known as fusekoshi no ri. Kaga Hosho (加賀宝生), the domain's Noh tradition, spread from samurai to townspeople and is still passed down today.
