01 / Spider fighting

The spiders that foughtare returned to where they were found.

Kajiki's spider fighting is said to have begun when Shimazu Yoshihiro, in camp during the Bunroku-Keicho campaigns, gathered female golden orb spiders and had them fight to cheer his soldiers. Run by the Spider Fighting Preservation Society, founded in 1991, it is held on the third Sunday of June each year, and in 2018 it was registered as a UNESCO Project Future Heritage.

02 / Tatsumonji-zaka

The road was built in 1635;the stones were laid 100 years later.

Tatsumonji-zaka is part of the Okuchi road, built in the 12th year of Kanei (1635), with stones laid a hundred years later. The stones were cut from a nearby hill. The slope is said to have run over 1,500 m, and about 500 m survives as it was. It is a National Historic Site.

03 / Moriyama House

A casters' house dealing in pots and kettlesstill bears its shop name on the storehouse roof.

The Moriyama family were wealthy merchants of Kajiki who prospered in iron casting from the Edo to the Meiji era, and in the late Edo period they also took part in casting cannon at the Shuseikan. They also made pans for brown sugar making in Amami and Okinawa. The old workshop is said to have been moved from a first-phase Shuseikan building. The main house and storehouse date from 1904.
