01 / Former Masuda House

The Important Cultural Property houseincludes a bath and toilet thought to be Taisho-era.

The Former Masuda House in Iriki Fumoto consists of the main house, built around 1873 (Meiji 6), a stone storehouse of 1918 (Taisho 7), and a bath and toilet building of the Taisho era. The bath and toilet building, 4.8 m by 3.0 m with a gabled roof, is presumed to date from the same period as the storehouse. The grounds hold a stone marker bearing an inscription of Meiji 6.

02 / Shipwright Oteki Family Materials

575 items remain from a shipwright's house,including 58 plans.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that Kumizaki once had a Satsuma domain-run naval port, and that the Oteki family served as its shipwrights. The materials span 145 years from 1657 to 1802 and include 58 plans, licenses, proportion manuals, and tools such as ink pots, planes and mallets. They are held by the Sendai Historical Museum.

03 / Toshidon of Koshikijima

On New Year's Eve, a long-nosed godvisits homes with children.

This ritual is handed down on Shimokoshikijima. The city's site writes that on New Year's Eve, Toshidon, wearing a long-nosed face made of palm bark and cycad leaves, visits homes with children aged 3 to 8, praises and admonishes them, and leaves after giving a New Year's rice cake. It became a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1977.
