Nonaka Kenzan, a senior retainer of the Tosa domain, built this intake weir of stone and pine. It is 327 m long, 11 m wide and about 1.5 m high. It watered the plain downstream and was also used for transport on the Funairi River. Now that a new weir has been built upstream, the site is Yamada Weir Memorial Park (山田堰記念公園), where a reconstructed stone intake can be seen.

The shrine storehouse (神庫, shinko) of Okawakami Birafu Shrine is a two-story earthen storehouse built in Tenpo 12 (1841). Above the cloud-shaped window in its north gable, an amanojaku (天邪鬼, a demon figure) supports a karahafu-style (唐破風) eave, and a plaster relief of a demon and clouds decorates it. The shrine's procession, onabare (おなばれ), is a prefecturally designated intangible folk cultural property and has been held at its autumn grand festival.

03 / Izanagi-ryu

It is said to take at least 10 yearsto earn the "yurushi" of a full taifu.

The taifu (太夫, ritual priests) of Izanagi-ryu usually work in forestry or farming like their neighbors and go out when asked. The role is not hereditary: those who wish to become one apprentice themselves to a master and receive the teachings. Their duties are four: rites for household and tutelary gods, prayers for the sick, prayer through divination, and appeasing the spirits of nature. The city board of education does not accept requests for prayers.

Kami City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Keikiso (渓鬼荘) is the thatched hermitage where the poet Yoshii Isamu spent about three years, from 1934 to 1937; at the time it stood on a cliff above the Monobe River. It has since been moved onto the grounds of the Yoshii Isamu Memorial Museum in Inono, Kohoku, where an exhibit recreates his life there. A small thatched hut of a six-mat living room, a four-and-a-half-mat study and a veranda, it became a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 2015.
  2. 02Okawakami Birafu Shrine (大川上美良布神社) in Kohoku is a shrine listed in the Engishiki (延喜式), and its main building and two Kesadasukimon bronze bells (袈裟襷文銅鐸) are prefectural cultural properties. At its autumn grand festival, onabare (おなばれ), a procession in which the enshrined deity goes in a line to the temporary shrine, Shinmeigu (神明宮), and back, has been held on November 3 each year.
  3. 03Kami was created in 2006 by the merger of Tosayamada, Kohoku and Monobe. Its area is about 538 km², and about 90% of it is forest. Kohoku has the city-run Yanase Takashi Memorial Hall, the "Anpanman Museum", and Ryugado Cave (龍河洞) in Tosayamada is a nationally designated Natural Monument and Historic Site, with Yayoi-period pottery and stone tools excavated near its exit.
