A keyhole-shaped tumulus of the middle Kofun period, estimated at about 128 m long. A 1980 excavation found a structure for storing burial goods that held about 700 pieces, including 146 straight swords and 472 iron arrowheads. The city says such a large find is rare in the Yamashiro region, and across the country as well.

02 / Bamboo grove

Moso bamboo is said to have been brought from Chinaby Dogen or by a monk of Obakusan.

About 160 moso bamboo stalks, each over 15 cm across, grow on 400 m² in the eastern part of the Jakusho-in Temple grounds, a Registered Cultural Property (Natural Monument) of Kyoto Prefecture. A stone monument records the temple tradition that Dogen brought the bamboo back, while an Otokuni tradition and a Meiji-era prefectural agricultural journal report that a monk of Obakusan transplanted it.

  • About 160 stalks
  • Area 400 m²
  • Prefectural registration, 2012

The city explains that Hosokawa Fujitaka built this rampart and dry moat in 1571 to defend the castle, and that part of the rampart reuses a burial mound. An entrance gate with an earthen bridge, arranged for flanking fire, can also be seen. It became a city historic site in 2021.

  • Built 1571
  • City historic site, 2021
