A memoir in the town's 1988 collection Historic Sites and Folklore of Seika records that white clay, the raw material of polishing sand and powder, was dug at Higashibata from the early modern to the modern era. The operators at that time numbered six, and the clay is recorded as going by sailboat from a landing on the Kizu River to many places.
