01 / Chinju-so
Built without a single nail, its eaves rest on a Yoshino cedar of about 20 m.

A detached annex of the house of the Tamaki family, wealthy Echigo landowners, and a town-designated tangible cultural property. The Chinju-so website says the building was planned in 1897 with the temple carpenter Matsui Kakuhei as master builder and completed over about three and a half years from 1914. No nails were used, and the Yoshino cedar eaves girder, 11 and a half ken (about 20 m) long, is said to have been carried by sea and up the Shinano River.
