The honden of Yoshikawa Hachimangu is single-storied, with an irimoya roof of cypress bark, and a gabled haiden is joined to its front in a T shape. The Toban Festival (当番祭) lasts about a month from October 1. "Tonin" chosen from the north and south districts live as sacred attendants. At the main festival, a procession centered on the tonin, riding horses, moves to the shrine, and after the mikoshi procession they race.

02 / Myohonji Banjindo (妙本寺番神堂)

Myohonji is a Nichiren-sect temple said to have been founded by the steward Date Tomoyoshi, who moved here from Kamakura, and is also called "Nishi-Minobu" (西身延). The Banjindo enshrines the thirty guardian deities of the Lotus Sutra in a one-bay nagare-zukuri hall. The prefecture's description infers the carvings were the work of a first-rate carpenter and calls it among the most splendid in the prefecture.

03 / Kusagina no Kakemeshi (くさぎ菜のかけめし)

Dried shoots of wild clerodendrum are rehydratedand served on rice with a clear broth poured over.

Young shoots of wild kusagi (クサギ) are picked and dried, then rehydrated and stir-fried, served on rice with chicken and other toppings, and a clear chicken-bone broth is poured over. In the past pheasant and wild hare caught in hunts were used, and it was a treat for festive days. It was certified as a "100-Year Food" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in fiscal 2022.

  1. 01Tenraian is a tea room said to be the first work of Shigemori Mirei (重森三玲), a garden researcher from the area. Built originally at the Shigemori residence, it was moved to its present site in Yoshikawa by Mirei himself in 1969 (Showa 44). It has a four-and-a-half-mat tea room and a three-mat preparation room, and the tea room has three alcoves in the formal, semi-formal and informal styles. It is a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
  2. 02In Yoshikawa, the town's Shigemori Mirei Memorial Museum stands beside Tenraian, and the Kayo town office building holds the "Yurin Garden" (友琳の庭) that Mirei designed in 1969 for the Kyoto Yurin Kaikan, moved there in 1999 (Heisei 11). Alongside the Toban Festival of Yoshikawa Hachimangu, the Kamo Grand Festival (加茂大祭) at Soja Shrine in Kamo-ichiba is counted among the prefecture's three great festivals.
  3. 03The town lies in the center of Okayama Prefecture on the Kibi Plateau at 200 to 500 meters, formed by the merger of the former Kayo and Kamogawa towns. Its specialties include Enjo cabbage and Pione grapes, and there are places serving the local dish kusagina no kakemeshi. An akiya bank is also available.
