01 / Former Senkyo Elementary School (旧遷喬尋常小学校)

A wooden schoolhouse completed in 1907. Construction cost 17,984 yen 56 sen, 2.93 times the town's ordinary budget at the time. It was designed by Egawa Saburohachi (江川三郎八) of the prefecture, using cypress and cedar from the Kiyama national forest. It began as a school in the rice storehouse of the Kuse magistrate's office, and Yamada Hōkoku chose its name.

02 / Sanchū Ikki (山中一揆)

Sanchū is the name for the Yubara and Hiruzen area, where the Sanchū Ikki, a peasant uprising, broke out in 1726. Its victims are said to be 51 people who were executed. The Tokuemon monument in Maki, Mt. Yajirodake, the Myōtenzuka at Dairin-ji and graves of the righteous are city-designated as Sanchū Ikki materials.

03 / Gōbara Lacquerware (郷原漆器)

Nearly every household in the hamlettook part in making lacquerware.

Chestnut-wood lacquerware made in the Gōbara hamlet of Hiruzen. The prefecture says its way of turning green chestnut logs, cut into rounds, is not seen in other lacquerware areas. Production stopped for a time because of the war, and revival efforts began in 1989. The 557 tools used to make it are nationally registered folk cultural properties.

Maniwa is a city in northern Okayama, in the middle of the Chūgoku Mountains. It spans about 30 km east to west and about 50 km north to south, with a total area of about 828 km², the largest municipality in the prefecture. It was formed in 2005 from nine towns and villages: Katsuyama, Ochiai, Yubara, Kuse, Mikamo, Kawakami, Yatsuka, Chūka and Hokubō.

  1. 01The Torafudake habitat in Misaka, Kamigōchi and Nakagōchi is a stand of yashadake bamboo whose stalks carry black spots from a parasitic fungus. It was designated a national Natural Monument in 1924, and entry is not allowed.
  2. 02In Nabeya, Kuse, stands the wooden Former Senkyo Elementary School, built in 1907 and an Important Cultural Property. In the Sanchū area of Yubara and Hiruzen, the Sanchū Ikki broke out in 1726, and in Gōbara in Hiruzen, chestnut lacquerware has been made.
  3. 03The Hiruzen highlands in the north are known for Jersey dairy farming, and the Ōmiya bon dance is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The city calls the giant salamander "hanzaki", and Yubara has the Hanzaki Center. Katsuyama has a townscape hung with noren curtains.
