01 / Carp streamers
A side job for lantern and umbrella makersbecame Japan's top producer.

Kazo's carp streamers, koinobori (こいのぼり), began in the early Meiji era as a side job for lantern and umbrella craftsmen. After the Great Kantō Earthquake, orders poured in from Tokyo wholesalers, and before the Second World War the town led Japan in output. The 100-metre Jumbo Koinobori (ジャンボこいのぼり), first made in 1988, is now in its fourth generation and swims over the Tone River banks every May at the Kazo Citizens' Peace Festival (加須市民平和祭).
