The town is bounded by the Ichino and Toki rivers to the north, the Arakawa to the east, the Iruma to the south and the Oppe to the west, and calls itself "an island surrounded by rivers". In the Keichō era Ina Tadatsugu enlarged small existing ring levees into the Kawajima-ryō Ōkakoi-zutsumi (川島領大囲堤, the great ring levee of Kawajima), which Matsudaira Nobutsuna later raised. Part of today's river embankment is built on it.

Every year from late November to early March, swans settle on the riverbed of the Oppe River, which runs along the west of town. They are easiest to see early in the morning and in the late afternoon; during the day they fly off to feed. The town posts the count every few days with photos, and its swan photo contest has now been held ten times.

  • Best at dawn and dusk

Tōyama Gen'ichi, founder of Nikko Securities, restored the fortunes of the family home that had fallen into ruin in his childhood, and built a mansion here in his home village for the mother who had struggled to raise him. It took two years and seven months from 1933. With a thatched east wing, a central wing with Western-style rooms and a sukiya-style west wing, it was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2018.
