On Aguni, where water was scarce, rainwater was stored in large water jars called tooji, cut from tuff on the west coast, and used as drinking water. They were carried to the port from the west coast, slung between two dugout boats on a ship's mast used as a pole, by adults who took turns, it is said.

  1. 01Tera is a limestone cave reached by following signs from the western edge of the village, a place of worship where a monk called Unsui is said to have died about 200 years ago while spending his days reciting sutras; the village archive also holds another story, of a monk from a Naha temple sent into exile who spent his life here
  2. 02The island's name is said to come from millet, once its main crop, and on the last night of the old calendar year the Marsuya, held for over 100 years according to the village archive, goes from house to house in each of 11 small districts, handing out salt and offering songs and dances
  3. 03The watch post site stands at the island's highest point, from which torches were apparently raised to report foreign ships to the Shuri royal government, according to the village archive; it was designated a historic site on 14 September 1984
