02 / Blankets

Izumiotsu's blankets beganwith cattle hair.

Blanket making in Izumiotsu began in the Meiji era, with cattle hair as the material. Made into cloth for clothing, it was too stiff and smelly to sell, so it became bedding, the city records. The wooden hand loom kept at the city's Oriamukan can use up to three weft colors. A local inventor devised that function in the early Taisho era.
