Shiotatsu (塩田津), a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, was a river port that used the Ariake Sea's large tidal range. Large cranes were installed in 1964 to unload pottery stone from Amakusa onto trucks. The measuring station weighed the pottery stone; the explanation the city gave the Japan Tourism Agency (2020) says it is no longer used for its original purpose.

Saga Prefecture's Bunkazai Sanpo (文化財散歩) records that a tea plant, normally small, has become a giant tree here. It is handed down that one plant of the Ureshino tea that Yoshimura Shinbei is said to have begun by sowing seed in the Keian era (1648–52) survives as this tree. Shinbei is revered as the tea's founder, and the city's site says the Chaso Matsuri (茶祖まつり) is held every April.

Living here

A hot-spring town and a river port became one city.

  • about 30,000 people

In 2006 the former towns of Ureshino and Shiota merged to form Ureshino City. Ureshino is a town of hot springs and tea; Ureshino tea is tamaryokucha, its leaves rolled round like magatama beads. Shiota lies on the old Nagasaki Highway and prospered by the water traffic of the Shiota River. The city hall has two offices, one in Ureshino and one in Shiota.
