01 / The name

From anywhere in the village,Mount Fuji stood to the west.

When the three villages of Tsuruse, Nanbata and Mizutani merged in 1956, the new village was named Fujimi (富士見, "Fuji view"), chosen over proposals such as Jōhoku, Mitsuwa and Irumano. The reason: from anywhere in the village you could see Mount Fuji far to the west. Mount Fuji also sits at the centre of the city emblem, and the city still lists nine spots, from the Arakawa embankment to its bridges, where the mountain can be seen.

The Mizuko Shell Mound (水子貝塚) dates from the Early Jōmon period, about 6,500 to 5,500 years ago. A 1967 survey confirmed about 50 small shell heaps, showing that the village was laid out in a ring. It became a National Historic Site in 1969 and opened as a park in 1994. Five pit dwellings have been rebuilt, and white ceramic chips mark where the shell heaps lay.

Nanbata Castle (難波田城) is thought to be the residence of the Nanbata clan, who were based in what is now Fujimi in the Middle Ages. Built on the Arakawa lowland, it was a flatland castle surrounded by three moats and earthworks. In the Sengoku period, Nanbata Danjō served as a senior retainer of the Ōgigayatsu Uesugi clan. In 2000 part of the site became a park with its moats and gates rebuilt, and two farmhouses from 1871 were moved to its west side.
