01 / Kappa

The priest spared the kappa, and next morning there were carp.

A kappa living in the Yanase River (柳瀬川) made mischief with people and horses until villagers caught it. The priest of Hōdō-ji (宝幢寺) talked them into letting it go, and the next morning crucian carp lay by his pillow. The tale was recorded in the Edo-period Gūisō (寓意草) and became known nationwide through Yanagita Kunio's Santō Mintan-shū (山島民譚集). The city has 28 kappa statues, each with a nickname.

In 1647, Matsudaira Nobutsuna, lord of Kawagoe Castle, improved the Shingashi River (新河岸川) and opened river landings. At Hikimata-gashi (引又河岸), where it meets the Yanase River, a market grew up; farm produce from the area gathered there and went by boat to Hanakawado in Asakusa, and the boats came back loaded with goods from Tokyo. River works later lowered the water, and a prefectural order in 1931 ended more than 300 years of boat traffic.

The Tagoyama Fujizuka (田子山富士塚), in the grounds of Shikishima Shrine (敷島神社), was built in 1872 by piling earth on a mound long said to be an ancient tomb. It is about 8.7 m high and 30 m across, with a womb cave, a zigzag climbing path and stones marking the stations. In 2020 it became a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. On open days you can climb to the top.
