The Asaka Citizens' Festival, Saikasai (彩夏祭), was started in 1984 by residents worried that local ties were fading. In 1994 it added the Kanhasshu Yosakoi Festa (関八州よさこいフェスタ), the first festival of naruko (clapper) dancing on Honshu, and 99 teams danced at the 43rd festival in 2026. About 9,000 fireworks go up over the town, and about 700,000 people come.

In the late Edo period, waterwheels were built on the full-flowing Kurome River and used for tasks such as polishing rice. Around Hizaori village (膝折村), waterwheel power was used to draw heated lumps of copper into thin wire, a trade called shindō (伸銅). It carried on as a local industry, switching from water to electric power, and flourished as the birthplace of copper drawing in the Kantō region.

In 1930 the Tokyo Golf Club decided to move its course from Komazawa in Tokyo to Hizaori village, and the move spurred a push to rename the village and make it a town. On 1 May 1932 Asaka Town was born, named after Prince Asaka, the club's honorary president. The town-renaming permit issued by the club is a city cultural property. Hizaori Station was renamed Asaka Station too.
