The diary of Takizawa Bakin, a late-Edo novelist, records for 10 November 1831 that the man who emptied his privy delivered 300 dried daikon. The ward describes it as dried daikon handed over in place of payment for collecting night soil, which the family then pickled as takuan. The next day the household packed three barrels.

The marsh-plant community at Sanpoji Pond in Shakujii Park was designated a national Natural Monument in 1935. At designation it was thick with plants such as Shakujii-tanukimo (a bladderwort), kakitsubata iris, bogbean and pygmy water lily. Spring water began to dwindle around 1965, and since 1971 groundwater has been supplied from deep wells.
