At RIKEN's Wako campus, a group led by Dr. Morita Kōsuke first synthesized element 113 in July 2004. In 2016 it was named nihonium, the first element name from Asia. The city named the road from Wakōshi Station to RIKEN Nihonium Street (ニホニウム通り) and set plates for the elements from 1 to 118 into the pavement.

The former Tomioka residence (旧冨岡家住宅) is a farmhouse thought to have been built about 300 years ago, among the oldest in Saitama Prefecture. When construction of the Tokyo Gaikan Expressway meant it had to be dismantled, the owner donated the materials and the city rebuilt it. It opened in 2006 as Niikura Furusato Minkaen (新倉ふるさと民家園). The thatched main house has an irori hearth.

Wako Jurin Park (和光樹林公園) lies on part of the site of Camp Asaka, which the US military requisitioned in 1945. Most of the southern area was returned in 1973, and about 20.2 ha on the Wako side became a prefectural park. It opened in March 1989 and was completed in January 1993. With open lawns and a jogging course, it also serves as a wide-area evacuation site in disasters.
