01 / Iron casting
The Tokyo Olympic cauldronwas cast by Kawaguchi iron founders.
The cauldron for the 1958 Asian Games had to be made in just three months. The iron founder who took the job, Suzuki Mannosuke (鈴木萬之助), collapsed and died after the mold broke during the pour, and his third son Bungo (文吾) finished it with help from fellow founders. The cauldron was lit again at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and a cauldron of the same design stands in Aokicho Park (青木町公園) in the city.
