About 7,000 to 5,000 years ago the sea reached far inland, and people lived on the edge of the uplands here. The Kurohama Shell Mound (黒浜貝塚) gave its name to Kurohama-style pottery, found across the Kantō region, and became a National Historic Site in 2006. The prefecture's oldest buried dog was found here. Since 2023 the site has been fully open, with the Jōmon shoreline recreated.

Kurohama Marsh (黒浜沼) is thought to have formed when silt carried by the Motoarakawa (元荒川) and other rivers dammed it; in the early Edo period an embankment split it into an upper and a lower marsh. Over 250 wild plants and 38 dragonfly species have been recorded in the surrounding wetland and reed beds. In 1979 it became a prefectural Nature Conservation Area, the only one in the urbanized southeast of the prefecture.

  • About 150 bird species
  • 38 dragonfly species
  • Only conservation area in the southeast

03 / Shikisanba

The Noh piece Okina, danced by local young men each autumn.

Uruido no Shikisanba (閏戸の式三番) is a folk performance in which Okina in a white mask, Senzai, and Sanbasō in a black mask dance in turn to pray for good harvests and prosperity. It is said to have been revived by a monk of Shūgen-ji (秀源寺) in the Hōei era (1704–1710). Every second Saturday of October, local young men perform it at the autumn festival of Atago Shrine (愛宕神社). It is the only shikisanba in the prefecture handed down as a folk event.

  • Only one in the prefecture
  • Said to be revived in the Hōei era
  • Second Saturday of October
