01 / Tumulus

In the stone chamber of a round mound,a coffin 2.85 m long.

Maruyama Kofun in Sakurabasama Historic Park is a round tumulus built in the first half of the 6th century. The house-shaped stone coffin in its stone chamber measures 2.85 m long, 1.46 m wide and 1.83 m high. It is made of Aso welded tuff from the Uto Peninsula in Kumamoto Prefecture, known as Makado stone.

02 / Bronze bells

Three sets of three nested bellslay in the soil of the hillside.

From Oiwayama, 24 dotaku bronze bells have come to light in all: 14 in 1881 and 10 in 1962. The 1962 bells turned up during earth-moving work. Nine of them had been placed in a pit in the hillside as three nested sets of large, medium and small bells.

03 / Festival

Taro is raised for two yearsfor this one festival.

At the autumn festival of Mikami Shrine, shrines made of taro stems, called zuiki mikoshi, are offered as sacred food. The stems are not eaten; the taro is raised from seed tubers over two years for this purpose alone. Five officers chosen from three shrine guilds offer five of them.
