Lost to reclamation at Hachirōgata,Tebajima became its only habitat.

Shiratamamo (シラタマモ) belongs to a genus of the stonewort family, and this is the only species known in Japan. It was once found at Hachirōgata (八郎潟) in Akita too, but was lost to reclamation, and Tebajima (出羽島) became its only habitat. Ōike Pond has the conditions it needs: two parts seawater to one part fresh, with the sea seeping in between boulders on the shore.

A rocky shore by the sea in Komugi (古牟岐). When the tide is in it becomes an island in the sea, and when the tide goes out it is joined to land; the view changes greatly with the ceaseless rise and fall of the tide. Islands so characteristic of Shikoku form the backdrop, giving the scenery depth.

Mugi is a fishing town at the southern tip of Tokushima, near the center of the Muroto-Anan Quasi-National Park (室戸・阿南国定公園), where the Kuroshio flows. Tebajima (出羽島) lies offshore, and the town calls Mugi Ōshima (牟岐大島) and Tsushima (津島) meccas of rock fishing. It has a vacant-house bank.

Mugi Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Tebajima (出羽島) is a fishing village on an island off Mugi. After the migration that began in earnest in the late Edo period, the settlement formed around a port that used an inlet on the island's north. It prospered on fishing centered on bonito, and traditional houses from the end of the shogunate to the early Showa era survive in high density.
  2. 02The huge Porites lutea coral in the bay of Mugi Ōshima (牟岐大島) is called the "Thousand-Year Coral" (千年サンゴ). The lunch boxes of Hamasekku (浜節句), when people take food to the shore on April 3 of the new calendar, and Tebajima's local dish shima-somen (島そうめん) are both registered as "100-Year Food" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
  3. 03The summer Himegami Festival (姫神祭) is a Mugi oddity tied to a tragic love story about the strange rock "Himegami" (姫神), and cooling fireworks close it. The town lies in Kaifu District (海部郡) and did not merge in the Heisei mergers.

If something caught your eye, ask the town itself.
