At Todoroki Shrine's autumn festival, men in white robes carry a portable shrine at a run down 140 stone steps. They pass through the grounds of Ryūō-ji, cut between rocks and cross the stream, then enter the pool below the falls to pray for health, safety and peace.

03 / Haha River Giant Mottled Eel Habitat

A rock on the Haha River is said to bewhere the giant eel came out of a cave.

The Haha River is a tributary of the Kaifu River. Giant mottled eels (オオウナギ, ōunagi) grow 1.5 to 2 m long and, fond of crabs, were also called "kanikui" (crab-eater). The area around Seriwari Rock (せり割り岩), said to be where an eel pushed its way out of a cave, is their habitat; in June, Genji fireflies gather here too.

  • Natural Monument (designated 1923)
  • 1.5 to 2 m long (town heritage map)
  • Designated area is closed to fishing (town heritage map, 2007)

  1. 01The Shishikui fossil ripple marks are a place where patterns made by sediment carried onto the seabed remain in rock as fossils. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes them as representative, in scale and state of preservation, of current ripple marks in Japan whose scholarly value is recognized as high, and has designated them a Natural Monument.
  2. 02The Kaiyo Town Museum in the Awa-Kainan Culture Village shows 70,088 old coins and their jar, found at Ōsato, and Kaifu swords made along the Kaifu River, while upstream on the Kaifu River lies Todoroki Ninety-Nine Falls, one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls.
  3. 03The town at the southern tip of Tokushima was formed in 2006 by three towns, and at the autumn festival of Ōsato Hachiman Shrine, red-lacquered boat-shaped floats called sekibune and other festival floats run through the Ōsato pine grove.

If something caught your eye, ask the town itself.
