01 / Yabusame at None Hachiman Shrine (野根八幡宮の流鏑馬)

In a 1950 record, the None district split in two,and each half took turns sending horses.

The yabusame (horseback archery) at None Hachiman Shrine (野根八幡宮) is said to date from the Kamakura period. A 1950 record cited by the town says the None district (野根郷) was divided into a front district (口郷) and an inner district (奥郷), which took turns each year to send horses. Today a preservation council runs it on the first Sunday of October.

02 / Kannoura Ponkan (甲浦ポンカン)

Bulldozers opened the mountainside, and a prefectural project made ponkan orchards.

A prefectural pioneer land-development project began in 1968 and created 64.6 ha in the Kannoura (甲浦) area. Ponkan were planted on hillside fields up to 15 degrees and on terraces above that. They are still grown around Ikumi's Pilot Mountain (パイロット山) and elsewhere, by about 30 growers (as of fiscal 2020).

  • Started Aug. 1, 1968; completed Mar. 31, 1972 (council)
  • 64.6 ha developed
  • About 30 growers (as of fiscal 2020)

03 / The None Side of the Noneyama Road (野根山街道の野根側)

Nihonmatsu, said to be the None-side milepost mound, got its name from two pines by the road.

The Noneyama Road runs over 35 km along ridges from Nahari Town to None (野根). The prefecture's guide says Nihonmatsu (二本松) is said to be the milepost mound on the None side, named for the two pines that stood either side of the road; one has withered in recent years. Shirogane Pass (四郎ヶ野峠) is the None-side trailhead, crossing Route 493.

Living here

Two towns, None and Kannoura, mergedand became Toyo in 1959.

  • about 2,000 people
  • Rural district town

Toyo was born on July 1, 1959, when the former towns of None and Kannoura merged. Both looked east over the Pacific, where whales swim, and the town was named Toyo (東洋) for it. The two rings of the town emblem stand for None and Kannoura. The town stresses that 甲浦 is read "Kannoura," not "Kōura."
